You can draw a box around part of the image using your mouse and then OCR the current page. This is handy if you just want to get the text from one region of the page. I am going to use MS Word to recreate the document but you could use Open Office or publisher, in fact any program that supports columns and photos.

Elucidate is very easy to use. Once scanned in Elucidate, you can highlight text, spellcheck and add comments to text. Alternatively, you can export scanned PDFs to a simple TXT file that you can copy and paste into another document or edit.

We found that the accuracy of scanned text goes down significantly below resolutions of dpi but Elucidate is a great app for quick and easy OCR jobs and costs next to nothing. Tesseract has to be used from a command line interface on Mac. Space is a fast and easy to use online OCR conversion tool which supports a huge number of languages.

We like the fact that apart from uploading documents manually, you can drag and drop images or simply paste in the URL of a page that you want to scan. Note however that file uploads are limited to 5MB and the free version is limited to 15 images per hour. Free OCR to Word differentiates itself through advanced image processing capabilities. It provides image tools for better image preview.

Most of all, the selection tool lets you exactly get what you select. You can convert any portion of an image that you require. No need to convert a whole image at a time if it is not necessary.
