What We Look for in a Mentor APIE Mentors should be able to commit to an hour each week throughout the school year to meet with their student and be available to attend an orientation training. Positive, Caring Adults. Good Listeners. Accepting and Supportive. What You Can Expect Our Mentoring volunteers have a support network to help guide them through the mentoring process.

The professional learning for the mentors focuses on exploring the essential components of being a successful mentor. Throughout professional learning sessions, mentors learn how to utilize tools and resources to help support their mentee s.

Mentors who are assigned a teacher in the first or second year of their teaching career per AISD Human Resource records and meet the stipend requirements may earn a stipend. Nationwide, that means today approximately 16 million youth, including nine million at-risk youth, will reach age 19 without ever having a mentor. Mentoring promotes positive social attitudes and relationships.

Mentored youth tend to trust their parents more and communicate better with them. A study showed that the strongest benefit from mentoring, and most consistent across risk groups, was a reduction in depressive symptoms—particularly noteworthy given that almost one in four youth reported worrisome levels of these symptoms The Role of Risk, Thank you for your interest in supporting quality mentoring opportunities for Austin ISD K—12th grade students!

Nobody else really does that. I dove into mentoring, thinking that I was going to be the one who would be making a difference. I soon learned that I had opened the door and had a new person in my life who would not only expand my horizons but make me laugh and with whom sharing a weekly lunch is the highlight of my week.
